La Antiguedad

La Antiguedad 1Editor’s Note: Each week, our friends at Cigar Guys Radio Show, based in Atlanta, GA, do a review called ‘The Cigar of the Week’ on their radio show, which can be heard Saturday mornings on AM1230 ESPN the Fan 2 (WFOM radio) from 9AM to 11AM. That review is printed (in its entirety) here on Cigarweekly.com, usually on the Monday following its broadcast.

This week’s selection is the La Antiguedad from Jose Pepin Garcia and My Father Cigars.

THE CIGAR BACK STORY

During the first quarter of 2014, Jose Pepin Garcia and My Father Cigars introduced the La Antiguedad, which translates to ‘The Antiquity’. La Antiguedad was once a Cuban brand, and is now utilizing the original box artwork of the brand. The line joins Flor de las Antillas as a representation of the Garcia family's Cuban heritage.

Jose Pepin Garcia was born in Cuba, and started rolling cigars at the age of eleven. Thankfully, Jose and the Garcia family made their way to the United States. In 2003, the family established a very small cigar factory in Little Havana.

In 2009, the family opened My Father Cigars in Nicaragua. Also known as the Garcia Family Industrial Park, this site comprised a seven acre complex. Since then, the family has produced many highly rated and acclaimed cigars, such as the Le Bijou 1992, the Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial and the El Centurian.

La Antiguedad 2THE CONSTRUCTION

La Antiguedad was blended by Jose Don Pepín García and his son Jaíme García. The blend uses a unique selection of tobaccos, starting with the wrapper, which is a slightly reddish hued Ecuadorian Habano Rosado Oscuro. A double Nicaraguan binder (one Criollo and the other Corojo) comes from the family farms, and drapes the fillers, which are Nicaraguan tobaccos from three prominent growing regions – also all from the Garcia family farms, and aged a minimum of three and a half years. The blend is being positioned as a stronger, fuller version of the Flor de las Antllas. All cigars are box pressed and packaged in beautiful boxes of twenty. They are available as a Corona Grande, a Robusto, a Super Toro and a Toro Gordo.

THE DRAW

The draw on the La Antiguedad was incredible, as all cigars out of the My Father facility are – effortless, easy and graceful. This cigar was a pure pleasure to smoke, with white clouds of smoke being produced.

THE CIGAR TASTE PROFILE

The La Antiguedad is a medium to fuller bodied cigar with incredible flavor and complexity. I tasted that earthiness that I like so much from Nicaraguan tobacco. Notes of cocoa powder, ground coffee and leather were predominant. Sweet notes of hazelnut, caramel and red cherry rounded out the flavors, as hints of black pepper and cinnamon played with the senses.

DOES IT GET A BUY RECOMMENDATION?

As I have stated earlier, the La Antiguedad was an easy cigar to enjoy. No wonder it has received so many accolades and has been rated a 92 by Cigar Aficionado. Even though it's for a more experienced cigar enthusiast, with no hesitation, I give this cigar a Smooth Draws Radio Show buy recommendation.
