Those young people, they've done it again! In this case, it really is a good thing. The young people in question, or Jovenes in Spanish, are the fifth generation of the Quesada family, owners of SAG Imports under the direction of Manuel Quesada. At last year's trade show, they marked his 35 years in the cigar business. The cigar was the first to bear the Quesada name, and it was, appropriately, the Quesada 35th Anniversary. It was a sensation, selling out halfway through the show's second day. The family tradition was passed on to this Fifth Generation who were completely responsible for the blend, manufacture and distribution of the 35th Anniversary.
This year, they come into the show, again in New Orleans, with a standard of excellence to maintain, if not exceed. With this year's new line, the Tributo, they have done just that very thing. I smoked the smallest offeringe in the line this evening. It is a little petit corona called the Alvarito which measures 4½" x 40. It has a wonderfully rich flavor that is redolent with nuances of leather and coffee, giving way to a slightly sweet cocoa at the finish. I was proud of myself that in researching the cigar, the makers, Raquel and Patricia Quesada Vega, Esther, Hostos Fernandez Quesada, Jose Manuel and Terence Reilly, described it in a similar manner.
From the background information which the company provided with the cigars, they describe the cigar this way:
The Quesada Tributo cigar is draped with a hybrid wrapper from Ecuador which was first introduced by us. Derived from four different seeds of tobacco, the wrapper gives the Quesada Tributo an incredible, unique taste. The binder is a Honduran from the Jamastran region that brings intense sensations to the palate with a hint of sweetness and combines very well with the Dominican and Nicaraguan ligeros in the filler.The cigar is a labor of love in honor of family members that are no longer with us but in one way or another shaped who we are today.
According to the company's newly introduced website, SAGimports.com the Hybrid Ecuador HCHS wrapper's four strains of origin are: Habano 2000, corojo, Habano Vuelta Arriba and Sumatra. The sizes, as mentioned, named for family members who have died, come in boxes of 24, with the exeption of the Alvarito which comes in a box of 50. The sizes are:
