CW Review: Perdomo2 Rhombus

Published Monday, August 21, 2000

Perdomo2 (pronounced Perdomo Squared) was introduced in 1999 at the RTDA Show from Nick's Tobacco Company. Nick's was started by Nick Perdomo in 1991 with just 2 rollers. Perdomo-2 features a box-pressed shape, Nicaraguan filler aged since 1994 and a Cameroon wrapper that has gone through two fermenation periods.

Pre-Smoke Comments

Bart Buettner (barton): It was an unusual shape, sort of an oblong pressed cigar. It had a nice, medium brown, lightly veined wrapper. The pre-light aroma was minimal. The cigar felt well made and evenly packed. Cap was good.

David Freeman (guitardave): Very nice looking box pressed stick. Could this be a Padron Annie or a Perdomo product?? Rough cap like a Padron product. Very full round pre-lite aroma. Definitely has Nic. tobacco. Looking forward to lighting this one up!!

Ed Doss (COEd): This cigar was beautiful looking 5.5 x 52. square pressed but not a tight press. rounded corners. The construction was excellent with a firm bunch and no soft spots. And for the wrapper, this thing was perfect and so oily it seemed to leave oil on my fingers. I was quite surprised at such on a light wrapper.

Greg House (Poohdvm): Nice looking box pressed cigar. The wrapper was a dark oily natural wrapper. Presmoke draw was firm but not too tight. Noted soft spots in one sample. Easy to light. The cigar formed a nice gray, slightly flaky ash. Burned even. No runs noted. The wrapper split half way down on one of the samples.

Robert C. May (boboli1): Box press, somewhat rectangular, dark oily wrapper some veins. Good firm construction, no soft spots. A nice looking cigar well put together.

Steve Rechtzigel (SRex): Pungent presmoke smell. Extreme box press forming an almost rectangular cigar. Foot appeared to have uneven bunching. Uneven start with some tunneling. Evened out halfway through cigar.

Tony Butler (B£azer): The cigars arrived without damage to packaging and didn't sit outside...I arrived just as the postman was approaching my home. The two samples had a reddish-brown wrapper, leading me to believe it had rosado skin. The caps were neat and well finished. No blemishes noticed. No "thick" veins. The wrapper felt of soft supple leather. Both were a bit soft in the middle. Their shape took away their anonymity.

Bart Buettner (barton): This cigar had a perfect draw, with great volumes of smoke. The burn was fairly even, with a flaky, light gray ash. The flavor was straightforward tobacco, with an earthy, slightly flinty taste. My guess would be Nic/Hon origin. It reminded me of a Honduran Hoyo de Monterrey or a La Tradition. It built in strength as smoked, and was really stronger than I like past the halfway point. I thought that it tasted somewhat green and could benefit from some aging.

David Freeman (guitardave): Slight uneven burn-perfect draw-pleasing floral aroma-mild body but well balanced. Very nice subtle flavors. Great lunch time stick!

Ed Doss (COEd): Before lighting this I had high hopes, such a beautiful smoke. It lit well and had great aroma. The amount of smoke that came from this cigar was awesome. Because of the perfect construction the burn was razor sharp, but the beauty ended there. From the first puff the cigar was very spicy but was very one dimensional that never changed. The spice was good but that's all I got out of it. I figured with such good spice that it would turn into a full-flavored smoke but it remained very thin.

Greg House (Poohdvm): The body and strength of this smoke were mild to medium. Noted basic tobacco flavors. There was some bitterness noted but this did not distract form the smoke. The flavor was light on the tongue with no appreciable aftertaste.

Robert C. May (boboli1): This cigar lit easily and burned even for most of the cigar, a little uneven the last 1/3. Good volume of smoke which remained cool to the nub. Straight forward tobacco flavor, med-full body. The finish was a little short and dry.

Steve Rechtzigel (SRex): Plenty of smoke. A very mild start which became somewhat spicy. Little or no aftertaste from this cigar. Developed a smooth complex flavor.

Tony Butler (B£azer): Hmm, the draw was tight which caused rather frustrated smoking experience. Can't comment on smoke production other than not much was produced. The flavor was quite vegetal and grassy with a slight hint of pepper. On the strength scale, I'd say it was mild+...not quite on the med scale. The finish was medium+, however, that vegetal/grassy flavor is one I don't particularly like, so it lingered longer than I liked. I liked the pepper but not enough to...I wasn't pleased overall.

Summary Comments

Bart Buettner (barton): Overall, this was a well made smoke, but too potent for my liking. However if you are someone who likes a cigar that demands your attention, then gives you a swift kick in the seat of your pants, well, maybe this smoke is worth a try!

David Freeman (guitardave): GREAT stick. Really feel like this one is a Padron product. Not familiar with the size but sure does taste like a PAN. Doesn't have a great depth of flavor but really appreciated this smoke. I F it's not a Padron annie and they retail for less. Gotta get some more.

Ed Doss (COEd): This is one very well made cigar which means a lot to me when smoking a cigar but the flavor just wasn't there. Maybe because I'm used to maduro wrappers, but it just wasn't as full as I like. A cigar this beautiful should be able to back up it's appearance but failed in a big way. Very spicy but not complex at all. If you like spice give this beautiful stick a try.

Greg House (Poohdvm): I had one sample that gave me all the problems. I noted soft spots in this cigar and the wrapper split while smoking. The other cigar was fine. It was a nice smoke, although nothing really jumped out at me. The flavors never progressed during the smoke. This cigar would be a nice daily smoke.

Robert C. May (boboli1): A good solid cigar, nothing fancy, that I would recommend giving a try.

Steve Rechtzigel (SRex): Mild start, built to medium complex flavor. Good smoke overall, much better than most.

Tony Butler (B£azer): I had high hopes of having a pleasurable experience with these because I had not tried them before. They left me with a bad taste in my mouth and now I'm gun-shy. The tight draw, coned ash, softness, and grassy flavor all led me to believe there was young tobacco that needs more time to mature and settle. Maybe I'll buy 1 or 2 and bury 'em for a looong nap. My guess: Perdomo2s?? (Rosado)

3 1/2 Stars -- Above Average

The Perdomo Squared is one of the new line of cigars that feature the increasingly popular Cameroon wrapper. In the past a Cameroon wrapper has usually meant mild Dominican filler tobaccos. This cigar features a core of spicy Nicaraguan tobaccos that add a twist to the nutty, spice of the Cameroon. Some reviewers thought it was mild, while others thought it was medium to full bodied. Many commented on the spicy flavors. And some picked up on the Nicaraguan tobacco but no one commented on the Cameroon wrap. A solid performer, although at $7.00 a piece, a little on the pricy side.
